How to identify HMPE / Dyneema?

When choosing a rope, it all starts with the fibre.

Polyester, Technora, HMPE/Dyneema: each has its own advantages, but also its limitations. Knowing how to identify them helps you avoid unpleasant surprises and extend the life of your running rigging.

🔥 The simplest method: the burn test

- Polyester → melts and gives off a burnt plastic smell.
- Technora → resists fire and burns slowly, leaving ash behind.
- HMPE / Dyneema → melts very quickly, with a blue flame and a characteristic wax-like smell.

⚓ Why is it important?

- Safety: you know exactly which rope you are using.
- Performance: HMPE / Dyneema rope is approximately 10 times stronger than polyester at the same diameter.
- Durability: avoid using a fibre that is unsuitable for your manoeuvres.
