Locked splice HMPE / Dyneema: step-by-step tutorial on hollow braid

HMPE / Dyneema is widely recognized in sailing for its outstanding performance: high strength, very low stretch, and excellent resistance to UV and abrasion. To fully benefit from these properties, the right termination technique is essential.
Today, we present our step-by-step video tutorial to make a locked splice on single-braid HMPE / Dyneema — a secure, reliable and easy-to-execute finishing method.

Why choose a locked splice on HMPE braid?

Unlike the standard splice, which retains over 95% of the rope’s strength but requires additional stitching for safety, the locked splice is self-locking and remains stable even without load.
It is therefore the ideal solution when:

  • Stitching is difficult or impractical

  • The rope is subjected to repeated load and unload cycles

  • A compact, strong and clean finish is required

Required materials

To make a locked splice, you will need:

  • A HMPE / Dyneema hollow braid

  • A long-eye splicing needle

  • A marker

💡 Gorilla Ropes tip: To extend the lifespan of the splice, protect the friction area with a polyester, Dyneema or Technora chafe sleeve.
