🧵 Cordura© ou Technora© : quel cordage choisir selon votre usage ?

🧵 Cordura© or Technora©: which rope should you choose for your use?

Are you hesitating between a Cordura© or Technora© rope? These two high-performance fibers have very different characteristics depending on their use. Here is a technical and practical comparison to help you choose the right material for your environment: cruising, racing, or industrial applications.

1. Composition and structure

Cordura© is a high-tenacity nylon, originally developed for military use. Its rough structure provides excellent abrasion resistance, especially when used as a protective cover.
Technora© is an aramid fiber, related to Kevlar, offering exceptional tensile strength and heat resistance. Very lightweight, it delivers an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio.

👉 Choosing the right rope cover
The fiber is only part of the equation. Cover, usage, and environment are just as important for durability and onboard safety.

2. Abrasion resistance

Cordura© excels for ropes exposed to repeated friction (winching, recreational sailing).
Technora© is better suited for extreme loads but often requires an additional protective cover to extend its service life.

3. Heat resistance

Cordura© withstands moderate temperatures but may deform or melt at high heat.
Technora©, on the other hand, retains its properties up to 500°C, making it ideal for winches, offshore racing, or high-temperature industrial applications.

4. UV resistance

Cordura© offers good resistance to sunlight.
Technora© is more sensitive to UV exposure and is therefore often used with a UV-treated outer cover.

5. Quick comparison: Cordura© / Technora©

Criterion Cordura© Technora©
Composition High-tenacity nylon Aramid fiber (Kevlar-like)
Abrasion resistance Very good Good (with cover)
Heat resistance ≈150°C Up to 500°C
UV resistance Good Low (needs protection)
Weight Lightweight Very lightweight
Price Affordable High
Applications Recreational sailing, general use Racing, industry, extreme conditions

6. Which rope should you choose?

👉 Choose Cordura© for its robustness, abrasion resistance, and excellent value for money. Ideal for halyards.
👉 Opt for Technora© if your priority is performance under high loads, heat resistance, or competitive sailing. A premium investment for extreme conditions.
