SELMA stainless steel splicing needle set – Ø 4 to 13 mm
The SELMA stainless steel splicing needle set makes it easy to create splices on many types of braided ropes.
These needles are particularly suitable for working with hollow braids, single braids and protective sleeves. Their shape makes it easier to open the braid and feed the rope or sleeve through it when making a splice.
Two splicing needle sets available
- Set of 4 needles: Ø 4 – 5.5 – 7.5 – 10 mm
- Set of 5 needles: Ø 4 – 5.5 – 7.5 – 10 – 13 mm
The choice of needle diameter depends on the diameter and construction of the rope to be spliced.
Which ropes can these needles be used with?
These needles can be used in particular to make splices on our hollow braids and single-braid ropes:
HMPE hollow braid for ropework
A versatile braid for making lashings, textile loops, lashings through fittings and various rigging assemblies.
Dyneema SK99 hollow braid
A high-performance braid with very low stretch, designed for highly loaded applications.
Technora hollow braid
Particularly suitable for applications requiring excellent resistance to abrasion and heat.
Polyester hollow braid for lazy jacks
A flexible, easy-to-handle braid suitable for making or replacing lazy jacks and which can be spliced to create clean, durable terminations.
Floating polypropylene hollow braid rope
Its hollow-braid construction also makes it suitable for various assemblies and splices.
24-strand single-braid polyester mooring line
A flexible construction that can be worked to create a spliced termination suitable for mooring.
Use with protective sleeves
The splicing needles can also be used to work with certain protective sleeves designed to protect areas exposed to chafe, clutches or winches.
Dyneema protective sleeve
For reinforcing high-friction areas on halyards and other heavily loaded ropes.
Technora protective sleeve
For areas requiring high resistance to abrasion and heat build-up.

Frequently asked questions about splicing needles
Which needle should I choose for making a splice?
The choice mainly depends on the diameter and construction of the rope. The needle must be able to enter the braid easily while leaving enough space to feed the rope through the inside of the braid.
Can these needles be used with Dyneema or HMPE?
Yes. SELMA needles are particularly well suited to HMPE and Dyneema hollow braids, commonly used for lashings, strops, textile loops, lashings through fittings and various ropework applications.
Can these needles be used to splice Technora?
Yes. They can be used with certain Technora constructions, particularly hollow braids. As Technora is stiffer and more abrasive than HMPE, it may require a little more care during splicing.
Can these needles be used with protective sleeves?
Yes. They are also useful for working with Dyneema and Technora protective sleeves, particularly when preparing chafe-protection areas on halyards and sheets.
What is the difference between the 4-needle set and the 5-needle set?
The 4-needle set includes Ø 4, 5.5, 7.5 and 10 mm needles. The 5-needle set also includes a Ø 13 mm needle, which is particularly useful for larger-diameter ropes or braids.
Are these needles suitable for beginners?
Yes. They can be used both for learning ropework and for carrying out regular splicing jobs on board. The splicing method must, however, be suited to the construction of the rope.
