Depending on your setup and sailing programme, we can add a simple whipping, make a double-braid eye splice or fit a Dyneema or Technora chafe sleeve to protect areas particularly exposed to abrasion.
Available termination options
Dyneema whipping
This finish secures the end of the rope and prevents the cover from unravelling. It is suitable when the halyard is attached with a knot or when a spliced eye is not required.
Double-braid eye splice
The splice forms an eye directly in the rope. More compact than a knot, it allows the halyard to be attached to a shackle or snap hook. When correctly made, a splice generally retains more than 90% of the rope’s strength, whereas a knot can reduce its strength by half.
Eye splice with Dyneema chafe sleeve
A Dyneema chafe sleeve protects the upper section of the halyard against abrasion at the sheave, mast exit or other friction points. It provides excellent chafe resistance while remaining lightweight and flexible.
Eye splice with Technora chafe sleeve
Technora is recommended when the rope is exposed to particularly severe chafe or repeated heat build-up. This finish is designed for intensive use and heavily loaded rigging.
Length of the Dyneema chafe sleeve
The length of the protective section is adapted to the rope diameter:
- Ø 6 and 8 mm: 1.5 m
- Ø 10 and 12 mm: 2 m
- Ø 14 mm and above: 2.5 m
The chafe sleeve locally increases the rope’s diameter. It is therefore important to check its compatibility with sheaves, mast exits and other narrow passages.

Important: this service must be ordered with a compatible double-braid rope. The termination and chafe sleeve are made directly in our workshop.
For each splice, add 1 metre to the required working length of the rope. For example, to obtain a finished halyard approximately 30 m long, order 31 m of rope.

Why choose a splice rather than a knot?
A correctly made splice generally retains more than 90% of the rope’s strength, whereas a knot can reduce its strength by half. A splice is also more compact and avoids unnecessary bulk near the sail or sheave.
What is the difference between a whipping and a splice?
A whipping simply secures the end of the rope. A splice forms a structural eye that allows a shackle or snap hook to be attached directly.
Should you choose a Dyneema or Technora chafe sleeve?
Dyneema provides excellent abrasion resistance with minimal weight. Technora is preferred when chafe and heat build-up are particularly severe.
What is the purpose of the chafe sleeve on the upper section?
It protects the section of the halyard that runs over the masthead sheave or rubs against a mast exit, guide or other part of the rigging.
Does the chafe sleeve increase the rope’s diameter?
Yes. The chafe sleeve locally increases the diameter. You must therefore check that this section can run freely through the relevant sheaves and narrow passages.
What size will the spliced eye be?
We make the eye to the internal length you specify. Please provide this measurement in the order notes.
Why must 1 metre of rope be added?
Making a splice requires additional length to progressively bury the core and cover. This metre must be added to the required working length.
Can this service be ordered separately?
No. This option must be ordered with the corresponding double-braid rope. The termination is made directly on the rope before dispatch.
