How to Make a Simple Splice on HMPE / Dyneema Hollow Braid

The simple splice on hollow braid is the essential solution to preserve  > 95 % of the strength of your technical ropes (HMPE, Dyneema). Forget unreliable knots: with this technique, you gain performance, durability, and a clean professional finish.

Why make a splice rather than a knot ?
Unlike a knot, a splice on HMPE hollow braid allows you to retain almost all of the rope’s strength, avoid premature wear points, and obtain a compact, clean, and long-lasting loop.

🛠️ Required equipment

  • HMPE hollow braid 4 mm ( view product ) or Dyneema

  • Long-eye splicing needle in stainless steel (appropriate diameter)

  • Cutter / scissors suitable for marine use, sharp blade

  • Textile marker (reference marks)

⚙️ Quick anatomy of a hollow braid

A hollow braid has no internal core: this lightweight structure makes splicing easier but requires:

  • Strict respect of the natural twist,
  • A long bury (≥ 100 × Ø) to avoid diameter steps,
  • Chafe protection to prevent abrasion.

📋 Step-by-step instructions

  1. Preparation

    • Make a first mark at 100 × Ø: A
    • Make a second mark B at the distance corresponding to the loop length from A
    • Make a third mark C at 100 × Ø + 3 cm from B
  2. Loop

    • Insert the long-eye needle at C and exit it at B.
    • Insert the working end into the needle.
  3. Insert into itself

    • Pull the braid into itself. It will exit at C.
    • Align mark A with B.
  4. Setting

    • Smooth the braid containing the working end.
    • Roll it under the palm to homogenize the diameter.
  5. Locking

    • Make 3 locking stitches to prevent the splice from opening when unloaded.

🔑 Pro tips

  • Minimum bury length : always respect 100 × Ø for optimal holding power.
  • Finish : before inserting the working end into the standing part, taper it over 15 cm to avoid any step.

Applications: textile shrouds, halyards, dock lines.

🚀 Summary

The simple splice on HMPE or Dyneema hollow braid is quick to master and preserves the performance of your ropes. With a careful, methodical setup, you achieve a professional-grade, ultra-strong loop.
